Investing in the Future of Your Community

By: Jayne Klein, Board President

Sylvia was a single mother of four children struggling to make ends meet after separating from the children’s father.  Without reliable transportation, it was difficult to keep a steady job to support her family.  The Community Foundation of Harford County’s Help Your Neighbor Fund stepped in to provide the resources necessary to help Harford Family House and Vehicles for Change to assist Sylvia.  This partnership made it possible for Sylvia to purchase a vehicle and get her family back on the track to success.  Having her own transportation has enabled Sylvia to keep a job and take care of her family.

This story—alongside the countless others like it—demonstrates the tremendous impact and unique importance of community foundations in this country. During the week of November 11th, we celebrate Community Foundation Week, our chance to share and reflect on these stories. Though you may not yet know your local community foundation, you’ve likely felt its impact.

That’s because the Community Foundation of Harford County and nearly 1,000 other community foundations across the country help to bring donors and residents together. The Community Foundation unites its efforts behind the efforts that will help the place we call home continue to flourish and grow.

Please join us, as we ask you and others in Harford County to support the work of the Community Foundation and the greatest needs of the county by giving to the CFHC Mission Fund and the Harford Community Fund.  As we enter the giving season, America’s generosity surges. Millions of people from every background will be looking to give back to the communities that have supported them. They’ll also look to ensure that their heartfelt giving—however they choose to give—will have the most impact. That’s why so many of them will choose to give to a community foundation.

A gift to your local community foundation is really an investment in the future of your community. We like to say that community foundations are “here for good.” At the Community Foundation of Harford County, we don’t think about the next election or business cycle, we think about the next generation and the next after that.

That can seem a daunting task, but it’s one that we all share. During Community Foundation Week, we hope you’ll join us in recognizing our collective impact and the difference we can make together.
